“The Box” is a sci-fi psychological thriller, based on a story by Richard Matheson (who wrote ‘I am Legend’ and ‘Somewhere In Time’). The film is about a young married couple – played by Cameron Diaz and James Marsden – who receive a mysterious box, and told that if they press a button on the box then they’ll receive a vast sum of money … but, if they push the button, someone whom they don’t know will die.The box is actually a test, to reveal aspects of human nature – concerning issues of individual greed vs social well-being – and is the work of an alien intelligence. The problem is, most people are tempted into pressing the button. Once they’ve done so, they receive the money and someone dies. The box is then presented to another couple, unknown to earlier couple, and as such by pressing the button one becomes a future victim of the ongoing process. To end this tragedy, the button must not be pressed. And if sufficient numbers of people don’t press the button, so humankind shows itself to be an ethically worthy species. This is a well-acted movie, with lots of drama and tension. The story unfolds at a slow pace, gradually drawing in the viewer. The outcome is quite mesmerising, and I found “The Box” to be a fascinating and enjoyable film. Yet it’s certainly not straightforward, nor typically mainstream. It poses many questions, and offers few answers. As such, I recommend this movie to viewers who enjoy the likes of “2001: A Space Odyssey” and “The Machinist”.

If you like films that are well made, well acted, an unusual story and filmed and edited with images and scenes that puzzle but eventually make sense and challenge your morals to some extent, then The Box ticks ... all those boxes ...The soundtrack is hypnotic as is the compelling cinematography. The special effects are seamlessly woven into the fabric of "reality" and you will certainly finish watching the film with some doubts about yourself and people around you. The beauty of it however is that the story and film are strong enough to enjoy also without having to feel that deeply about the morality tale within it.One of my favourite movies of recent years
